I am interested in transgender body experience, trauma and systems of protection. The physical nature and "tooth" of raw canvas allows me to draw a trauma victim's portrait in only so much detail, no matter how sharp my pencils are or how hard I try. The grain of the canvas pushes back against the pencil and simply won't allow a certain clarity of form. The injuries become softened. The person can't become a specimen to pour over and a voyeuristic and reductive gaze cannot be fulfilled. Instead, it's my hope, a compassionate sight experience has the potential to happen.
